Contest & Fun Fly, Sat 5 Oct 2024The Rhode Island Soaring Club (Inc.) is a chartered club of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, AMA # 1478. Originally founded in 1972 as " Gliders, Sailplanes & Scale Modelers," (John Maxwell was one of the original founders), we are a special interest group (SIG) whose focus is on sailplanes, gliders, free flight, old timer models and electric sailplanes.
RISC Club Calendar -2024 Season RISC encourages all aspects of radio control soaring, while the majority of its members fly thermal or electric sailplanes. We welcome new members and can provide help to quickly get a novice in the air. AMA Insurance is provided to the local turf farms, with the provision that anyone using the fields is a member of both the RISC and AMA , and adhere to the field rules. The Rhode Island Soaring Club also supports the AMA Intro Pilot Program which enables a beginner to try flying with a designated club member before applying for membership. Contact the Club Secretary for details. Members fly sailplanes, both winch and electric, launched from turf farms usually on weekend mornings. However some will also be flying off the slopes at Ft. Adams in Newport or Beavertail in Jamestown. All prospective members are welcome at our informal monthly meetings to learn about our hobby or if you are in the area feel free to come down to the fields and introduce yourself. Contact a club officer to verify date/time/location for next monthly meeting, which are listed on the Contact Us page. Non club members with a valid AMA membership visiting the area may fly with a club member. Contact a club officer to arrange your visit. |
Our flying areas are located in Washington County, near the Richmond, RI airfield.
All fields are privately owned turf farms, and we must always use good common sense when flying at them. Refrain from parking vehicles on the grass; don't walk or drive in newly plowed or planted fields. If the fields are wet, even a foot print can harm the crop. |
